How to Play Hushroom: Official Game Guide & Wiki
Hushroom is a free 3D virtual study hall and cozy social simulation game where up to 10 strangers customize chibi characters, run independent Pomodoro timers, and focus together in a warm lamplit diorama.
Welcome to the Hushroom 3D Study Hall
Hushroom is a browser-based 3D social presence game designed for late-night studying, deep reading, coding, and creative work.
Most productivity tools feel like spreadsheets or high-pressure leaderboards. Hushroom takes the opposite path: it is a warm, real-time 3D diorama where up to ten people sit around a shared oak table late in the evening. Outside the tall arched windows, blue moonlight or soft rain falls against the glass; inside, amber table lamps cast a quiet pool of light over notebooks, mugs, and sleeping cats.
There are no accounts to register, no public streak counters to maintain, and no surveillance cameras. You dress a clay-styled 3D chibi avatar, pick a first name and country flag, and walk through the study hall door to claim an open seat. Everyone at the table runs their own independent Pomodoro rhythm—focusing in silence and chatting only when their personal break begins.
- Instant Play, Zero Signup: Runs natively in mobile portrait and desktop landscape browsers using WebGL / Three.js with no downloads or account walls.
- Independent Pomodoro Timers: You never have to wait for a room-wide countdown. Start a 25/5, 50/10, or custom focus block whenever you sit down.
- Autonomous 3D Character Life: While you focus, your character writes in their notebook, turns pages, and blinks naturally. When your break starts, your avatar stands up and walks to a cozy rest spot in the room.
How to Navigate, Look Around & Customize Your View
Whether you play on a phone propped beside your notebook or a widescreen desktop monitor, the camera adapts to your screen.
Hushroom features both a manual free-look orbit camera and an intelligent Auto-Director camera. By default, the camera frames the shared study table so you can see your companions working alongside you. When someone walks through the door, heads to the sofa for a break, or checks on the room cats, the Auto-Director gently pans to follow the moment before returning to the table.
At any time, you can drag the scene to look around manually, pinch or scroll to zoom in on your desk, or tap the Recenter button to snap back to the default diorama angle. If you prefer a completely static view while working, toggle off the Auto Camera or enable Reduced Motion in your system settings.
- Orbit & Pan (Mouse / Touch): Click and drag (or swipe with one finger on mobile) anywhere on the 3D scene to rotate the camera around the study hall.
- Zoom In & Out: Use your mouse scroll wheel or two-finger pinch gesture to inspect character outfits, desk props, or the rain outside.
- Zen Mode (Shortcut: H): Press the H key on desktop (or tap the Eye icon in the room menu) to hide all UI panels and leave only the 3D diorama and ambient soundscape.
- Interactive Room Cats: Spot the sleeping tabby or tuxedo cat on the rug or windowsill and tap them to trigger a synthesized WebAudio purr and chirp.
Dressing Your 3D Clay-Toy Chibi Avatar
Every character in Hushroom is built from procedural 3D geometry with vertex-baked palettes and expressive 2D canvas face decals.
Before entering the study hall, you visit the 3D Character Stage. Characters are proportioned at 2.6 heads tall with tactile, rounded clay-toy silhouettes and soft toon shading. You can start from curated signature looks or mix and match every single item across six customization tabs.
Your entire outfit—including skin tone, hairstyle, hair dye, hat, top, trousers or overalls, footwear, and up to nine simultaneous accessories—is deterministically packed into a compact 27-bit integer ID. That means your exact custom look travels across the network to every other student in the room in just four bytes.
- Hats & Headwear (6 Styles × 8 Colours): Choose from No Hat, Ribbed Beanie, Baseball Cap, Bucket Hat, Wool Beret, or Plush Cat Ears.
- Hairstyles & Skin Tones (6 Styles × 8 Hair Colours × 6 Skin Tones): Pick Crop, Swept Fringe, Classic Bob, High Ponytail, Cozy Bun, or Voluminous Curly hair.
- Outfits & Trousers (9 Tops × 10 Top Colours × 7 Trouser Shades): Dress in a Pullover Hoodie, Cable-Knit Sweater, Buttoned Cardigan, Track Top, Crewneck Sweatshirt, Puffer Vest, Collared Shirt, Roll-Neck Turtleneck, or Denim Overalls.
- Footwear & 9 Stackable Extras: Pair Sneakers, High-Tops, Boots, Loafers, or House Slippers with Round Glasses, Studio Headphones, Hair Clips, Knit Scarf, Canvas Backpack, Winter Earmuffs, Ribbon Bow, Ear Pencil, and Freckles.
Public Halls, Library Lofts & Private Study Rooms
Explore two public matchmaking halls and two invite-only private room scenes tailored for different group sizes.
When you join Hushroom from the entrance, our room pool matchmaker automatically places you into the fullest active public room that still has an open chair—so you almost always walk into a lively table of six to eight companions rather than an empty lobby. If you want a change of scenery, click Move Room at any time.
Want to study exclusively with your classmates, partner, or Discord study group? Open the Private Room dialog to generate an unguessable invite link for either a six-seat Fireside Lounge or a two-seat Attic Study.
- The Public Study Hall (8 Seats): Our signature grand room featuring a long shared oak study table, green banker lamps, floor-to-ceiling night windows, bookshelves, a leather break sofa, and two resident cats.
- The Library Loft (8 Seats): A warm timber-beamed mezzanine lined with stacked bookcases, a crackling hearth fireplace, and brass reading lamps.
- The Private Fireside Lounge (6 Seats): An invite-only study room built around a warm hearth rug and mid-century armchairs—ideal for small study groups and book clubs.
- The Private Attic Study (2 Seats): A cozy, sloped-roof hideaway under a rain-streaked skylight built specifically for one-on-one body doubling with a study buddy.
How Focus Blocks, Break Spots & Quiet Chat Work
Hushroom protects your attention during focus blocks while giving you a warm social space to unwind on breaks.
Click the timer pill at the top of the screen to choose a preset rhythm (25/5 Classic, 50/10 Deep Work, 15/3 Sprint, or 45/15 Extended) or dial in custom focus, short break, and long break durations. You can also tag what subject you are studying—such as Calculus, Literature, or TypeScript—so your completed sessions are logged to your personal 1-day, 7-day, and 30-day analytics.
To ensure the room never turns into a distracting chatroom while you are trying to work, Hushroom enforces Break-Gated Chat. While your timer is in Focus mode, the chat composer is locked and incoming speech bubbles above the table appear softly veiled. The moment your focus block completes and your break begins, your character walks over to the window seat, sofa, or bookshelves, and break chat unlocks so you can say hello and celebrate your session.
- Focusing (● Amber Circle): Seated at the table writing and reading. Break chat is muted so your attention stays 100% on your work.
- On Break (☽ Teal Crescent): Your avatar strolls to one of five rest spots (window seat, sofa, bookshelves, stretch corner, or cat rug) and break chat opens.
- Away (○ Slate Ring): Automatically set when your browser tab stays in the background for over 90 seconds—never faked or manually toggled.
Adaptive Rain, Room Tone & Battery-Friendly Frame Pacing
Seamless CC0 field recordings and procedural WebAudio synthesis respond dynamically to how hard the room is focusing.
Each public room rolls a shared weather baseline—70% clear starlit night and 30% gentle rain—so everyone in the room experiences the same atmosphere together. If you prefer rain every night (or a clear sky), you can override the weather locally in one click from the bottom dock.
Our WebAudio engine blends gapless loops of rain on glass, subtle late-night room tone, and hearth fire crackle (in the Loft and Lounge). As more people at the table enter Focusing status, the room’s aggregate focusDensity rises, subtly softening the high frequencies of the rain so the room feels hushed and deeply concentrated.
- Drift-Free Frame Limiter (20 / 30 / 60 / Max FPS): Studying for three hours shouldn’t drain your laptop battery. Cap the 3D renderer to 30 FPS or hide the UI to automatically step down GPU usage.
- Shape-Coded Accessibility & Reduced Motion: Every status badge uses distinct geometric icons (●, ☽, ○) alongside colour, and full prefers-reduced-motion support disables camera sweeps.
